In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My poster vs existing horror movie posters

Additional points to consider:

  • After evaluating my poster I decided to make some additional changes, a convention I added was a production blurb to make my poster look more professional.

EEEEEEE

  • I also added a link to a Facebook page I created for the movie as well as a Twitter hashtag ‘#gameovermovie’ as I found from my audience research that my audience are avid users of social media. These conventions are used on existing posters such Possession.

My magazine vs existing film magazines

Additional points to consider:

After evaluating my magazine cover I decided to make some additional changes.

magpic

  • I changed the main image so that more characters were incorporated in the cover of my magazine. I also made the lead character bigger so that it dominated the cover which connotes power. I also included the victim (right) and the anti-hero (left). I chose the positions of the characters due to the Shoulder Angel concept whereby the devil in on the left shoulder and the angel on the right, I have adapted this idea as having the anti-hero on the left as he is revealed to be the villain (devil) and the victim who represents innocence is located on the right (angel).
  • I also added a caption at the very top of the magazine which reads ‘THE NATIONS FAVOURITE MOVIE MAGAZINE SUBCRIBE NOW!’ this convinces the reader that this is the best movie magazine which would make them assume that the content will be great.

My Trailer vs Existing Trailers

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My three final products:

Movie poster:

EEEEEEE

Movie magazine cover:

Trailer:

  • I compared my main product an ancillary texts to The Matrix Reloaded promotional package as this, like my film is also based on a computer technology concept in terms of the storyline therefore I have compared the features used in their promotional package compared to mine.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Throughout completing my promotional package I have referred to audience feedback and research and have learned that it is a vital aspect of creating anything for a specific target audience.

I began researching my target audience by looking at secondary research, I looked at British Film Institute’s official statistics to find out what age group enjoy the horror genre. These statistics also showed me the genres that specific social classes watch, I found that the social class c2 enjoy watching horror, therefore when adding content to my magazine cover I included cover lines that would appeal to this particular social class such as ‘Win an iPad’ as this category have low incomes and may be attracted to this competition. I also chose to include this competition offer as looking at psychographics I found that The Struggler are those who enjoy horror films, this group have low incomes therefore may be enticed into this offer.

Forms of Audience Feedback:

  • Online Survey

In terms of primary research I created a survey online and posted a link on Facebook and Twitter which redirected my audience to the survey. I felt that this was a quick and easy way to gather research as posting a link enabled me to reach wider audiences, just posting questions on Facebook limited me to the friends I had whereas Twitter, being public, allows the general public to participate in the survey which gives me a wider range of results. From my primary research I found that audiences like to be challenged by interesting storylines and seek something new within the genre that contains so many overused clichés.

  • Discussion pages/forums

I also looked at existing views on horror films by looking at discussion pages such as Horror.com, I also looked at reviews on IMDB as well as looking at tweets posted by the general public. From this research I learnt that the horror audience like to actively engage in discussion therefore when I planned a storyline I wanted to create something from a topic/concept that was current, this is how I came up with the idea of using technology to drive the plot.

After creating the individual products for my promotional package I collated audience feedback through again, creating online surveys as well as asking people via text message. Both are quick methods of research.

When I made the first edit of my trailer I posted it to YouTube and embedded the link into an online survey, I then posted the link to the survey to Facebook & Twitter, from this feedback learnt that more cuts need to be made, more suspense, my audience also suggested revealing the character had been killed at the end.

After I received this feedback I added more footage and made significant changes to the trailer, I received feedback with comments such as ‘need to build suspense more’ and ‘the girl should be killed at the end’ this shows me that the audience enjoy the ‘thrill factor’ and like to be scared.

When gathering feedback for my poster and magazine cover I also created surveys in which I asked my audience if they preferred the first version I created or the second.

Overall, my audience liked the concept of the promotional package with the idea of a computer game running throughout – they liked the effects and fonts and effects I created which represent gaming and technology. They thought I could have been a little more adventurous with the colour scheme in terms of using something other than just red black and white.

  • Texting friends

This was useful in that I was able to directly ask people however they could be bias as they were friends and despite asking everyone in my contacts list not everyone responded which gave me a limited sample.

This is an interview I conducted with a friend, a 18 year old male who plays computer games regularly, overall he liked the trailer – especially the unique storyline which is similar to the feedback I received for my poster and trailer. My interviewee thought that this trailer would appeal to both males and females but especially a teenage audience which demonstrates to me that I have successfully reached the demands of my audience.

advantages disadvantages

Overall I have learnt that horror audiences actively engage in discussion about films through social media and discussion sites, I have also learnt that an audience of 15-24 year olds are aware of the codes and conventions of the genre which influenced me to challenge these expectations. From my audience research and feedback I learnt that the viewers are very familiar with existing horror films and the clichés that they all carry therefore when planning the storyline I made sure that I created something unique, From the criticisms and improvements I received I learnt that my audience know what they want therefore I made significant changes to my products in order to meet their needs; from the positive audience feedback I received I have learnt that I have successfully created a promotional package that appeals to my target audience.
